Three Feathers - { graphite on creme paper }

One of my favorites from a sketchbook now filled and gathering dust on the book case. I like to take a little time now and then to scan in some scribblings and throw them into photoshop. Now I share them with you.

A note this piece: There is a place where the work that I have done with art mediums begins to cross over into some of my more "ritual" practices. Within the past couple of years specifically I have been trying to distinctly delineate between my graphic design and my ritual art. Working to design sygils, crafting symbols and giving a face to some of these parts of my practice has been an incredible experience for me.
This piece was an example of some of the work I was doing in trying to find the balance between what I do purely to be aesthetically pleasing and the work I do to induce some type of "shift".

I'll be putting up more of my work along these lines as time permits.

Enjoy.

Collateral Murder

Originally put up by wikileaks.org this video is of an Apache air strike in Iraq in 2007. The video shows them firing upon a gathering of people in the streets of a suburb who they claim to be in possession of weapons. After the initial engagement a van pulls up to pick up the bodies and, one would assume, get them medical care. The soldiers then request permission to engage a second time and fire upon the unarmed evac crew. Turns out two of the people shot down in this video were employees of Reuters News agency and that there were children inside of the van. I just wanted to be another spot for people to find this video. The hosts for this may start to be shut down... We shall see.

From wikileaks: "WikiLeaks has released a classified US military video depicting the indiscriminate slaying of over a dozen people in the Iraqi suburb of New Baghdad -- including two Reuters news staff. Reuters has been trying to obtain the video through the Freedom of Information Act, without success since the time of the attack. The video, shot from an Apache helicopter gun-site, clearly shows the unprovoked slaying of a wounded Reuters employee and his rescuers. Two young children involved in the rescue were also seriously wounded."

The Art of Piracy...

Want to know more about how to tap into the world of torrents? It's a beautiful, thing it is. Find all you need to know in these concise articles...

http://www.utorrent.com/documentation/beginners-guide

http://www.wikihow.com/Download-Torrents

Find an applications that suits your needs. I highly recommend Transmission which can be found here:

http://www.transmissionbt.com/download.php

It's small, simple and efficient. Some of the other torrent clients get incredibly in-depth and convoluted. No need for all that nonsense, keep it simple.

Go to sites such as the infamous Pirate Bay, mininova, isohunt or BTjunkie and find the movies, music, books and apps that you desire.

REMEMBER that pirating is ILLEGAL. Which means cover your ass and support those worth supporting (especially smaller programmers and independent musicians, in my opinion). If you're running a PC make sure that your firewalls are ON and well configured to limit any outgoing connections. If you're on a mac I STRONGLY recommend getting Little Snitch, which can be found here.

Welcome aboard.

Virelai - Havmandens Kys [2006]

Phenomenal traditional music hailing from Denmark. Incredible musicianship all around with female vocals that are powerful...almost sounding a bit like Bjork at times. Excellent composition and arrangments, good quality recording...this is just an amazing album all around. It's incredibly difficult to find anything from these folks, so enjoy all the more thoroughly...

From the website:

"Virelai is based in Denmark and plays music from the middle ages and from the Danish folk tradition. The repertoire includes dancing melodies from the south of Europe as well as old Nordic ballads and songs.

You can meet Virelai anywhere: in the streets making people dance wild; to a medieval market with the children singing along; at your school’s, company’s or best friend’s party or as a soundtrack to a fantasy evening. You can be taken into a circle chain dance or sit down and fall into some old legend sang by Anna Katrin.

The word Virelai comes from old French and means ”the beauty of music, dance and poetry”. The band was founded in 1999..."

Reading is for suckers...

"Meet Trenchmouth Taggart, a man born and orphaned in 1903, a man nicknamed for his lifelong oral affliction. His boyhood is shaped by the Widow Dorsett, a strong mountain woman who teaches him to hunt and to survive the taunts of others. In the hills of southern West Virginia, a boy grows up fast. Trenchmouth sips moonshine, handles snakes, pleases women, and masters the rifle—a skill that lands him in the middle of the West Virginia coal wars. A teenaged union sniper, Trenchmouth is exiled to the back-woods of Appalachia's foothills, where he spends his years running from the past. But trouble will sniff a man down, and an outlaw will eventually run home. Here Trenchmouth Taggart's story, like the best ballads, etches its mark deep upon the memory."

One of the finest books I have read in a long time. A timeless hillbilly epic. If you're a fan of a good story, you may want to strap this one on for a go. Reminds me of a quote I heard not too long ago...

"If you're gonna walk through the valley of death, make damn well sure you are, without a doubt, the baddest motherfucker in the valley."

Indeed.

The Year of No Light - Nord

Amazing. For fans of ISIS, Irreversible, Explosions in the Sky, GIANT and Minsk...this band brings it. Hard. Sparse vocals and amazing arrangements. You owe it to yourself to play this loud with the lights off. Seriously.

Charlie Parr - Roustabout [2008]

Another damn fine example. Released in late 2008, Charlie Parr puts together some amazing music. Somewhere between the dirty sound of some New Orleans stomp, some nice gritty back woods country and old ragtime stylings similar in vein to the finger picking of Jack Rose, this music comes into it's own. He stands apart with the records he's put out over the past 10 years and this is as much proof as anyone should need that Charlie Parr is a man worth a listen.

Joe Pug - Nation of Heat

There is indeed a resurgence of folk / Americana happening in the past 5 years...not everyone's cup of tea, no doubt, but for those of us who enjoy the raw, rootsy, acoustic music of days past there is a wealth of damn fine music that has been coming out in the past handful of years. I read an article about this fella in a local rag not too long ago and it popped out at me as something that may be worth checking out. I promptly went home and had it almost immediately become a regular on these dusty speakers. Simple, straightforward with a dash of Bob Dylan's folksy story telling. Give it a listen...
